Seminary Consultation On Mission

The Seminary Consultation on Mission, known by its acronym, SCOM, is a creation of the Council of Deans of the eleven Episcopal seminaries to encourage, cross-pollinate, and coordinate mission interests of the schools. It is also a member of the Episcopal Council on Global Mission.   The Convenor of SCOM is The Rev. Dr. Ian T. Douglas, Episcopal Divinity School.

When the Consultation was established some twenty years ago, teaching of mission and mission related topics in our seminaries was spotty at best. In the ensuing years, major steps forward have been taken. From the reports given at the annual meeting it is clear that, in one way or another, all of our seminaries are now giving serious attention to global mission. Three (Trinity, EDS, and Virginia) have full-time faculty appointments in missiology, while the other eight all have one or more faculty members with explicit assignments in these areas. Programs are diverse, but include:

  • Classroom instruction in history, theology, and current shape of world mission, and in world religions.
  • Preparation of M.Div. students to be mission educators in parishes.
  • Cross-cultural field experiences, domestic and foreign, including the "Panama program."
  • Intern experiences in other cultural settings as long as a year.
  • Education of international students which enriches partner churches as well as the U.S. seminary.
  • Partnership and exchange relationships with Anglican seminaries around the world, and in some cases with mission agencies.
  • Visits by missionaries and representatives of mission agencies.
  • Explicit preparation of some students for work as missionaries in a different cultural context.
  • Programs with a variety of foci, such as youth ministry, church planting and congregational development, rural and small church ministries, lay formation and education in mission, ministries to particular language groups (Hispanic, Asian, etc.)

All of these activities have been greatly informed and enlightened by three major Consultative Conferences in which faculty and students from American seminaries met with counterparts from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. We can now honestly say that the Episcopal Seminaries are active and engaged partners in the current renewal of the Church's commitment to global mission.

"And the rulers of the nations shall bring their treasures into it":
FOR MOST of the first two millennia of Christian history the geographical centre of Christianity has been the northern hemisphere. During this century a radical shift has been taking place. Most of the western world is now secularized, with church membership shrinking drastically, and Christian influence on the wane.
