A086 directed SCMD (as the successor to the former Council for the Development of Ministry) to "continue to develop a clear theology of ministry."
Resolution A086 went on to authorize SCMD "to undertake a full review of Title III Canons in order to propose a complete revision to the 73rd General Convention." SCMD determined earlier in this Triennium that the task of articulating a theology of ministry through a consultative process, with discussions held around the Church, was a considerable piece of work in itself. (See the Introduction of the paper for fuller a description of the process of articulating the theology.) Therefore, the Commission chose to delay initiating a formal process for canonical revision until after the 73rd General Convention.
The Commission considers this paper part of an on-going process. Further steps in that process include:
A meeting between SCMD's Theology of Baptismal and Ordained Ministry Task Group and representatives of the committee that completed for the House of Bishops a Pastoral Study on Priesthood. This meeting is planned for June 2000.
A hearing open to all interested persons on the Theology of Ministry is planned for July 4, 2000 at General Convention in Denver, Colorado, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (You may come to all or any part of this hearing.)
A meeting of members of SCMD after General Convention, to begin organizing a process of canonical review and revision that allows for open and widespread discussion. SCMD will work cooperatively with the Committee on Constitution and Canons.
The Pastoral Study on Priesthood and the Theology of Ministry papers will be among the studies used as groundwork in the anticipated canonical revision process.
