Song of Moses, The

Canticle based on an OT text celebrating the crossing of the Red Sea by the people of Israel, as recorded in Ex 15:1-6, 11-13, 17-18. It may be a later elaboration of the song of Miriam, Ex 15:19-21. This canticle, also known as "Cantemus Domino," appears as Canticle 8 in the BCP (p. 85). The Song of Moses is used at the Easter Vigil after the reading of Israel's deliverance at the Red Sea (Ex 14:10-15:1). It is especially suitable for use in the Easter season and is suggested for use by the Table of Canticles after the OT reading at Morning Prayer on Sundays during the Easter season. It is also suggested for use after the OT reading on Thursdays at Morning Prayer throughout the year and at Evening Prayer on Mondays except during Lent. The 1979 BCP was the first to include this canticle.
