Synaxis

The liturgy of the word, or Pro-anaphora, at the eucharist. The term is from the Greek for a meeting or assembly. It is related to the word "synagogue," which was the place of gathering for Jewish worship. The basic elements of reading from scripture, psalmody, and prayer were included in the synagogue service. Christians in the early church continued to participate in worship at synagogue and celebrated the eucharist at home. After Christians were expelled from synagogue worship, the main elements of the synagogue service came to precede the eucharist in a single Christian service. These elements are still present in the synaxis at the eucharist. The term has also been used in the Christian tradition for any meeting for public worship.
