Can a Priest Have More Than One Job?

Priests are not just to be found within the parish or other congregational setting such as a mission or cathedral; they may also be found engaged in a variety of contexts as chaplains or as bivocational ministers. As chaplains, priests work in schools, colleges, universities, and seminaries, in hospitals and nursing homes, in other healthcare facilities, social service agencies, in correctional institutions such as prisons, and in all branches of the military. As bivocational ministers, you can find priests as teachers, of course, but also as medical doctors, psychologists and social workers, journalists, even diplomats and lawyers. In fact, integrating another vocation with one’s priestly identity is possible across the board: the important thing is to be able to discern and articulate how a particular vocation can enrich and be enriched by the sacramental ministry appropriate to the priesthood. God calls different people to all kinds of service; the important thing is to follow that call, wherever it leads.
