ERD gives assistance to Haiti and the Dominican Republic following Tropical Storm Jeanne

9/23/2004
[Episcopal Relief and Development]  Episcopal Relief and Development is supplying emergency assistance to Haiti and the Dominican Republic after Tropical Storm Jeanne ravaged communities in both countries. The storm has killed 19 people in the Dominican Republic. In Haiti, more than 700 are dead and some 1,000 others are declared missing after flood waters and mudslides devastated the northern city of Gonaives. Some 250,000 are homeless in Haiti and Jeanne destroyed at least 4,000 homes and damaged thousands more.

"The loss of life, homes, and other belongings caused by the storm is overwhelming," said Sandra Swan, ERD President. "Haiti is just beginning to recover after civil unrest and disastrous floods devastated the country earlier this year," she said.

Mark Spina, ERD's Director of Emergency Response, just left Haiti after working with the Diocese to assess a response to the disaster.

On behalf of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development is providing critical assistance in the areas of emergency food, shelter, and clothing to vulnerable families in the Dioceses of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. ERD will continue to work in both countries to help people recover after this hurricane season.

"Tropical Storm Jeanne caused strong rains and overflooding in the country," said Bishop Julio Holguín of the Dominican Republic. "Due to the severe damage and destruction that Jeanne caused to people, housing, and agriculture, the diocese is providing materials and pastoral support to the victims."

The storm has reformed as a hurricane and might threaten the Bahamas and southeastern United States.
