[Episcopal Relief and Development]
Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is providing emergency assistance in Venezuela after torrential rains caused flooding and mudslides throughout the country. At least 37 people have been killed over the past week and 42 others have been injured. More than 16,000 people are homeless after their homes were washed away or partly destroyed by the rains. Thousands of families have been evacuated from communities along the coast blocked by overflowing rivers. "Many families, children, and adults have lost everything and because of the disaster find themselves suddenly homeless," said the Rt. Rev. Orlando Guerrero, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Venezuela. "These families have many needs." Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, has declared a state of emergency in the capital of Caracas and nine other states. On behalf of Episcopalians, ERD is providing emergency assistance to the Diocese of Venezuela for people affected by the flooding. The assistance will supply critical supplies such as mattresses, drinking water, and food for displaced children and families. To make a contribution to help people immediately after disasters, donate to the Emergency Relief Fund at www.er-d.org, or call 1.800.334.7626, ext. 5129. Gifts can be mailed to: Episcopal Relief and Development, Emergency Relief Fund, PO Box 12043, Newark, NJ 07101. Episcopal Relief and Development, an independent 501 (c)3 organization, saves lives and builds hope in communities around the world. We provide emergency assistance in times of disaster. When the immediate crisis is over, we rebuild devastated communities and offer long-term solutions in the areas of food security, health care, and HIV/AIDS.
