ERD provides aid to repair primary school in Malawi

3/22/2005
[Episcopal Relief and Development]  Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is helping students at the Anglican primary school in Chiweni, Malawi, continue their education after strong winds blew off the school's roof. A recent storm in Chiweni, located in the Chiraduluzu District and Parish of the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi, affected the area and removed the roofs of several buildings.

"Since it is still the rainy season, the children need a roof over their heads in order to continue with their schooling," said Bishop James Tengatenga of the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi. "Chiweni is the newest of our schools which we began in response to the community's plea for us to build a school for them." Approximately 500 children attend the school.

ERD is providing emergency assistance to the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi for resources to replace the roof at the diocese's primary school in Chiweni.

"After the storm, we responded by mobilizing the community to mold bricks and provide some of the manual labor required [to repair the school]," said Tengatenga. "Last year, we planted some trees around the school but they have not reached sufficient height to be windbreakers. It is our hope that as they grow, this will provide the needed cover to protect the school."
