NEW YORK CITY: Seminar for religious leaders - Auburn Theological Seminary in New York City, in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Science and Religion at Columbia University, will offer a course titled “Evolution, DNA, and the Soul” January 10-13, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. 

This ground-breaking course will offer participants the biology background necessary to understand the complex scientific, medical, and ethical issues that emerge in pastoral care. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss the theological and pastoral implications of recent advances in medical science, while gaining practical knowledge that will enhance their ministries. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore these issues outside of the classroom with a visit to museums or laboratory facilities in NYC. The course is led by Robert Pollack, professor of biological sciences and director of the Center for the Study of Science and Religion at Columbia University. He is a widely respected microbiologist, the former dean of Columbia College,  and author of seven books, including Signs of Life: The Language and Meanings of DNA and The Faith of Biology and the Biology of Faith: Order, Meaning, and Free Will in Modern Science.

WASHINGTON, D. C.: Story of Ruth focus of free lecture - Washington National Cathedral will host a free lecture “Spread your cloak over me” January 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The lecture will explore the story of Ruth, grandmother of King David, as told in the Old Testament. She arrives in Bethlehem—a widow and a foreigner—and, one night seeks protection from her kinsman. She makes a simple request, “Spread your cloak over me.”

Even today, many widows and orphans face a similar desperate plight. They embody for us the disenfranchised and neglected. How is care for them a matter of faith? How might we advance the protection of the vulnerable as a matter of moral responsibility and civic responsibility?

Join Dr. Hibba Abugidieri, assistant professor of history at Villanova University, the Rev. Katherine Grieb, associate professor of New Testament at Virginia Theological Seminary, and Rabbi Nancy Fuchs Kreimer, director of the religious studies program at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, as they uncover what the three Abrahamic traditions teach about our care of these outcasts who shoulder the burden of survival.

NEW YORK CITY: Book reading and signing – A book reading and signing will be hosted by Church of the Holy Trinity on January 11 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the recent release of the Rev. K. Jeanne Person’s book “Where You Go, I Shall.”

Called “thoughtful and insightful,” the volume tells the stories of many of the Bible’s remarkable women who are widows, offering meditations on the scriptural narratives and invitations to prayer.

“Where You Go, I Shall” was co-authored by Jane J. Parkerton and Anne Winchell Silver – themselves widows - who reflect upon aspects of their own experience and needs that relate to the biblical stories.

LOS ANGELES: Presiding Bishop visits L.A. – Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold will visit Los Angeles during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity January 14 – 16 to share in a series of ecumenical and interfaith observances themed “Making Common Cause.” Bishop Griswold will be the chief consecrator for ordinations to the Priesthood at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, and will visit the Los Angeles Baha’i Center, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and the Cathedral Center of St. Paul.

NEW YORK CITY: Presiding Bishop celebrant at Huntington - Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold will serve as principal celebrant at the annual William Reed Huntington sermon and dinner at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New York City.

This annual tradition, in honor of Huntington, will be held on January 18, at 6 p.m. Huntington was rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Manhattan, and author of the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral of 1888. The Quadrilateral is the document upon which all ecumenical dialogue between the Episcopal Church and other Christian churches has been based.
