[Episcopal News Service]  The month of February, Black History Month, is a time to celebrate and embrace the contribution that Black people have made to the United States. The Episcopal Church has designated February 13 as the day to celebrate the life and ministry of the Rev. Absalom Jones, the first African American priest ordained in the church. Many Episcopal parishes have planned commemorative events. A brief list of such celebrations taking place throughout the Church is available here.   Additional events, special services and diocesan conventions taking place throughout the Episcopal Church follow.

              On January 31, the Rev. Samuel T. Lloyd, dean of Washington National Cathedral, will be the guest speaker at the St. James' Church Winter Parish Dinner, themed "Scatter the Darkness."

              LADUE, Missouri: Diocese celebrates Absalom Jones/Richard Allen

              The Commission on Dismantling Racism has announced that the Rev. Jayne Oasin, social justice officer for the Episcopal Church, will be in the Diocese of Missouri February 1-4 as part of the annual Absalom Jones/Richard Allen celebration.

              Oasin will lead "Dismantling Racism" workshops February 1-2. On February 3, she will lead the Absalom Jones/Richard Allen celebration themed "Singing the Lord's Song in an Alien Land: Fulfilling the Gospel Imperative in a Multicultural World."

              ALEXANDRIA, Virginia: Celebration of Black alumni at Virginia Theological Seminary

              Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) is recognizing Black History Month with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist on February 2, at 7:15 p.m., in the seminary chapel, that will honor the ministry of Black alumni/ae of both VTS and the Bishop Payne Divinity School.

              Bishop Payne Divinity School was founded in Petersburg, Virginia, in 1878, to prepare Black seminarians for ministry in the Episcopal Church of the United States. When the school, named for Bishop John Payne, VTS 1839, the first Missionary Bishop to Liberia, closed in 1949, VTS inherited its records and its heritage. Today, the Bishop Payne Library keeps the schools memory and heritage alive.

              The celebrant will be the Rev. Dr. Lloyd A. Lewis, VTS '72, the Molly Laird Downs professor of New Testament at the seminary, and the Rev. Allen F. Robinson, rector of St. James' Episcopal Church at Lafayette Square, Baltimore, Maryland, will preach.

              Area choirs will provide music and a reception will follow the service.

              NEW YORK CITY: Trinity Choir performs Carissimi and Monteverdi

              Trinity Choir has been exploring the early music of Europe in its 2006-2007 concert season.

              The choir will present Jephte by Giacomo Carissimi and Lætaniæ della Beata Vergine and Messa à Voci da Cappella by Claudio Monteverdi on February 6, at 6 p.m., at Trinity Church, Wall Street and Broadway, New York City.


              NEW YORK CITY: Organist Janette Fishell to perform at Church of the Holy Trinity

              Janette Fishell, of East Carolina University, will present "A Tale of Three Cities: Weimar, Prague and Paris" on February 6, at 8 p.m., at Church of the Holy Trinity, in New York City. She will perform the music of Bach, Franck, Litaize, Vierne and Petr Eben on the 60 rank Rieger pipe organ.

              RALEIGH, North Carolina: Episcopal Urban Caucus 2007 Assembly

              Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and President of the House of Deputies Bonnie Anderson will attend the 27th Assembly of the Episcopal Urban Caucus, February 7-10, at the Holiday Inn Brownstone in Raleigh, North Carolina.

              A focal point of this year's gathering, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), comes out of the 2006 General Convention initiatives. The assembly will also explore a process for Truth and Reconciliation and Prevention of Violence and will view the documentary film, "Traces of the Trade."  The Rev. Michael B. Curry will preach at the February 8 evening Eucharist.

              ST. LOUIS, Missouri: Krewe Mardi Gras Ball '07

              Laissez les bons temps rouler! At Krewe Mardi Gras Ball '07, there will be a N'Awlins-style jambalaya dinner, crowning of a King and Queen, and dancing to "The House of Bishops" on February 9.

              The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the first black Episcopal Church in the United States, will celebrate the life and ministry of the Rev. Absalom Jones, its first rector and the first black priest in the Episcopal Church, on February 11 at 10 a.m. The guest preacher will be Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated on the original altar (table) used by Jones during the 18th century.

              In celebration of its 30th anniversary, The Center for Christian Spirituality at the General Theological Seminary, in New York City, is pleased to announce that the Rev.               The Diocese of Oregon's second annual Children’s Day at the Cathedral will be held February 24 at Trinity Cathedral in Portland, Oregon.

              All children in the diocese, kindergarten through fifth grade, are invited to attend. This year’s theme is "A Circle of Seasons." Using a rotation model, the children will explore each season of the church year through a well-planned day of experiential activities including arts and crafts, music, drama, storytelling, food, and worship.
