The Rev. James A. Diamond, dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Cincinnati, Ohio.

[Episcopal News Service]  The Rev. James A. Diamond, dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Cincinnati, Ohio, will become the first recipient of the Bishop Herbert Thompson Jr. Distinguished Humanitarian Award.

The Cincinnati Human Relations Commission (CHRC) established the award to honor the late Bishop Herbert Thompson Jr., the first Black bishop of Southern Ohio, for his standing in the Cincinnati community. The commission plans to present the award annually to an individual whose vision, passion and commitment reflect that of Thompson.

"I had immense respect and great affection for Bishop Thompson," said Diamond. "I am deeply grateful to receive an award bearing his name, particularly one established to recognize the work of reconciliation, which has meant so much to both of us."

Diamond will receive the award at the commission's annual community dinner on May 3, at the Hilton Netherland Plaza, downtown Cincinnati.

For tickets and information call Suellen Chesley at 513-947-8825.
