Protecting Civil Liberties

Encourage the U.S. Congress to hold public hearings about the USA Patriot Act of 2001 and possible curtailing of civil liberties. (GC 2003)
Oppose any further expansion or extension of the USA Patriot Act of 2001 which would further curtail the civil rights of the ethnic and religious minorities thus threatening our nation’s revered and fundamental respect for civil liberties. (EC 04/03)
Share with the whole Church, appropriate members of government, and members of the Islamic community, this Church’s strong opposition to the restrictive measures now being invoked against certain immigrant groups without adhering to the constitutional safeguards that should be available to such persons. Oppose legislation to alter the current tax code to allow houses of worship to endorse political candidates, create political action committees, or funnel political donations to partisan political causes and candidates while retaining tax exempt status. (EC 10/02)
Urge the protection of constitutional rights and civil liberties which are founding principles of our democracy, so that the rights of certain persons will not be wrongfully jeopardized because of their ethnicity or race while recognizing legitimate security concerns in the wake of September 11, 2001.
