Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Office of Government Relations located?
The Office of Government Relations (OGR) is located in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill in the historic United Methodist Building.  In 1916, the Methodist Episcopal Church purchased the property to lobby for Prohibition and in 1931 erected the 110 annex in which OGR resides.  Church office space was built on the lower levels while rental apartments were built on the upper floors to generate income.  Members of Congress moved in to the apartments to be within feet of their office doorsteps.  Over the years, apartments were converted into office space leaving a few remaining apartments.  It is still common today to run into members of Congress in the elevator on their way to work.

Does the Office of Government Relations offer paid internships?
Typically the internship is on a volunteer basis.  In some cases a stipend may be available.

What is the standard intern work schedule?
OGR hours are from 9am to 6pm Monday through Friday.  Interns may work part or full time depending on their school or work schedule.  Our office will be flexible in accommodating intern schedules.

Is OGR located close to public transportation?
Our office is conveniently situated near three metro rail lines.  OGR is an easy walk from Union Station on the red line and Capitol South on the blue and orange lines.

How many positions are available?
OGR has a staff of five and limited office space.  We can accommodate up to 2 interns per semester.   So, apply early!

Do interns have to be Episcopalian?
It is not required that interns be Episcopalian.  Episcopalian applicants are preferred.  All applicants should read the public policy positions of the Episcopal Church.

Do interns have to major in a specific area?
No.  However, to ensure a positive experience, interns are expected to have an interest in public policy, the political process, grassroots organizing, or government or non-profit organizations.

Is housing provided?
No, but we are happy to provide contact information for housing options at local universities. Interns are responsible for making their own housing arrangements.

Can interns earn academic credit?
We are happy to follow the procedures required of interns who are seeking academic credit.
