Southern Faith, Labor and Community Alliance Conference & School -- Memphis, TN
Saturday, July 22, 2006 - Saturday, July 29, 2006
It was the struggle for workers’ rights that brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the city of Memphis on the day of his assassination.  That work is now more urgent than ever.  In July 2006, Word and World will gather in Memphis for a Faith and Labor School to remember Dr. King, foster our communities and coalitions, and engage in the struggle for social and economic justice. This Faith and Labor School will gather faith-based activists and organizers for a week-long “alternative seminary.”

The conference is sponsored jointly by southern clergy, organized labor, community groups, and Word & World. This assembly will gather together hundreds of union organizers, labor activists, clergy, and people of faith.

Based on state by state work preceding the conference, we believe the core of a faith-labor Southern Strategy can emerge from this gathering. We will model a collaborative relationship between Labor and Faith activists, and will begin to mobilize around specific labor campaigns in Memphis and around the region.
Word & World School participants will join in this gathering.
