Lent 1: Climate Change Affecting Our Environment
“The destruction we see around us is not an accident. But then, neither is the fact that you and I have been placed here to do something about it.” -Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston

Our climate is changing – and that means different things in different regions around the world. In some places it means droughts, in others extreme storms, and in still others melting ice. What it means for all of us is a degradation of the amazing beauty that God created for us. It means that we should be doing all we can to slow these changes in our environment.

Things you can do:
  • Stop your junkmail and unwanted catalogs using a service like GreenDimes

  • Cover drafts in doors and windows making sure they are all weather-proofed.

“Spirit of God, forgive us.... Instead of holding your Creation in sacred trust, instead of respecting the inter-connectedness and beauty of our universe; we have wasted and polluted, disrupted the balance, and ignored our responsibility to those who come after us.... We confess that we have neglected our prayer life and community building. We have lost our way and are not the people you called us to be. Accept our prayer and restore us. In your mercy, forgive us. Forgive us. Forgive us. Amen.”

-Janet Chisholm, Vice-Chair of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship, A Christian Prayer of Confession

Things You Can Do:

  • Collect rain water to water your plants instead of using the hose

Green Stories from Episcopalians: "Small But Mighty"

Here at Christ Church in Anchorage, AK, we began an education/encouragement program to help people move toward awareness and increasing action related to the environment and global warming. Our parish is small (about 45 active members), but self described as "mighty". In September, we put an article in our newsletter (see attached) and then put a list in our fellowship hall where people could record their actions and changes toward a "greener" life style. Then, in our next newsletter in our November newsletter, we summarized those changes and made more suggestions (see attached). In a couple of weeks, we'll have the third installment.

One of the great things about this has been the ongoing conversations between parishioners about small, but potentially mighty ways we CAN make a difference.
