Document Description: The priest is the primary catechist of the congregation. That is the starting point for discussion of the person, function, and training of the catechist. This statement about the role of priest as primary catechist is not meant to denigrate the role of lay catechists, but rather to raise the vision of the importance of catechesis in the life of the church. Every Christian, including children and youth, is a catechist or teacher, in that we share a common life of faith and influence each other.
