Peer ministry, in this course, will be understood to mean all those who are fulfilling their vocations as Christians. It is a ministry where students are trained to employ their God-given gifts, gifts that they already possess. The peer minister’s primary role is not to be responsible for program and its many components. This model of peer ministry can be a great tool for evangelism providing both an invitation into the Christian faith and the campus ministry community. The peer minister is taught how to ‘come-alongside’ their fellow-student as a companion and the peer minister is trained to listen, to welcome, and to refer. In many ways, the campus peer minister can be the ‘front line’ for the chaplain. Students on campus have unique access to other students that even campus ministers do not. Campus peer ministry can help to maximize the reach of campus ministries that are not staffed full-time. For Campus Peer Ministry to be effective it must consist of trained mentors, and supervision and training of student peer ministers.
