Eco-nomics and Eco-logy share the same Greek root, oikos, meaning household. Yet we rarely connect the two. As a result our own personal pursuit of money, and our culture’s unquestioned quest for economic growth, often do not serve the well-being of God’s creation, resulting in inequity and ecological degradation. This workshop will be interactive and introduce resources for use in personal and parish life. Facilitated by Mike Schut.

Your Epiclesis is Showing: Incarnational Prayer in Everyday Life

There is a particular focus on the Incarnation in the Episcopal Church. In worship we touch, taste, and move to experience God’s presence among the congregation. We use prayers tools like the labyrinth and prayer beads to engage our bodies in the prayer experience. Paul urges the church in 1st Thessalonians to pray without ceasing. In this workshop we will explore what it means to live a life of Incarnational Prayer, in which all that we do becomes a prayer. This can mean intentional time set aside for reading scripture and meditation, or going to a bar with friends. Join us to consider how we might engage the holy in the ordinary. Body Politik: The Relationships between Gender, Faith and Action
Marriott Grand Ballroom, Salon B
The UN convenes a Commission on the Status of Women yearly. This commission draws its priorities from the Beijing platform for action, which advocates for justice and equity for women across the world. This year, 10 young women from the Episcopal Church participated as delegates to this commission. Their participation provides an example of the Episcopal Church’s priority to engage with international policy reform in favor of the oppressed. It also demonstrates a commitment to develop youth leadership. What is your opinion about the status of women in our generation? Do you think there is an issue of gender inequity? As young adults how does the way we view gender affect our leadership in the church? Does the church help or perpetuate these inequities? This interactive workshop will explore positive and negative expressions of gender identity and the church’s role in promoting equity for all. Facilitated by Karen Longenecker & Areeta Bridgemoha.
