Document Description: Addiction among adolescents is challenging families throughout society without regard to economic, social, racial or religious background.  As a pastoral leader, your ministry is critical to adolescents and their family members who are feeling overwhelmed and concerned about addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. The goal of this conference is to provide you with an understanding of addiction, the spiritual dimensions of the illness and recovery, and your role in helping adolescents and their families affected by addiction recover and heal.

A one-day conference entitled "Listening for the Still, Small Voice, Addiction and Adolescents: A Spiritual Journey from Illness to Recovery," will be held November 29, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., at Trinity Church, Boston.

Open to parish, youth and campus ministers as well as lay youth group leaders, the conference aims to provide an understanding of addiction, the spiritual dimensions of the illness and recovery, and their role in helping adolescents and their families recover and heal.

The keynote speakers include the Rev. John MacDougall, director of Spiritual Guidance, and Jim Kane, national outreach director, Hazelden Foundation; Dianne Seger, manager Clinical Services, Hazelden Center for Youth and Family; Kris Kampf, clinical supervisor, Gray Wolf Ranch; and Kevin M. Cross, M. Div student, Episcopal Divinity School.

Topics will include:

  • Addiction - What is it? What does it have to do with spirituality?
  • Addiction and Adolescents
  • Recovery - How? What is the role of spirituality?
  • A.A. - what is it? What are the spiritual dimensions of the steps?
  • Treatment Resources and Options - identifying and using our local resources
