Lesson Plans for Young Children, Pentecost 23
Year C, Proper 27 (BCP pg. 184 or pg. 236), Job 19:23-27a; Psalm 17 or 17:1-8; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-3.5; Luke 20:27(28-33)34-38

WAYS TO BEGIN: Greet each child. Spend time talking about the past week. Have light refreshments and/or sing a song if you like.

THE THEME: Sadducees (a group within Judaism) asks Jesus a question about the resurrection of which they had been taught not to relieve in. Jesus gives a straight forward answer. As young children often have a lot of questions about what happens when people die, this is a passage that might have a lot of interest to them. Jesus explains suggesting that in the resurrection, things are different than on earth and that living or dead and resurrected, God is the God of both realms.

THE STORY: Luke 20:27-38. Hear the story read aloud. Explain that the Sadducees are a group of Jews with slightly different beliefs than Pharisees. Just as Episcopalians believe in some things differently than Baptist or Methodist, Sadducees did not believe in the Resurrection, but Pharisees did.

SOME QUESTIONS TO TALK ABOUT:

1. What questions do you have in this story about Jesus?
2. What do you think he is trying to teach us?
3. What do you think Heaven is like?
4. What does it mean to you to be "a child of God"?

AN ACTIVITY TO DO: As a class, write a letter to Jesus asking Him about the resurrection or any other questions anyone has. Ask him to explain things you don't understand. (To the teacher: you may wish to share this letter with your priest or members of an Education for Ministry (EFM) group or adult class and perhaps they would like to make suggestions as to how they think Jesus would answer the questions. Perhaps the priest or some other adult might be willing to come to call and talk with the children about their questions.)

If time permits, the class might enjoy drawing individual pictures of their idea of heaven.

End with a prayer thanking God for His continuing love and care for each of us.
