WAYS TO BEGIN: Greet your class. You may wish to play a game or talk informally as students arrive. Plan to offer some light freshments.
THEME: God doesn't reward us for doing what we are expected to do.
THE STORY: Luke 17:5-10 Have someone read the story aloud. You may wish to provide Bibles for the class to follow as the story is read.
1. The story begins with the disciples asking for an increase of faith. What does faith mean to you? Is life easier or harder for people of great faith?
2. Jesus says that the grain of mustard seed has more faith than the disciples, but if they had that much faith they could work miracles. What lesson do you think he is trying to teach them?
3. Can anyone "give" you more faith? Explain your answer.
4. The story of the servant is about not expecting rewards for doing what is required of you. Do you agree that one should not be rewarded for doing their duty or doing what they are supposed to do? Discuss.
5. Do you think a student should be rewarded for making good grades or keeping their room straight? Why or why not? Should they be punished if they make a lower grade when they are capable of better grades or if they fail to keep their room straight or do whatever simple duty their families require of them?
6. What kinds of things do you believe are worthy of a reward?
7. How do you feel about yourself when you follow your best instincts and do what is expected of you? Is this sufficient reward or do you want more?
8. What do you expect from God?
Take a poll in your church among students and adults. Ask the following questions:
- Should a student be rewarded with money or special privileges for making good grades?
- Should a young person get an allowance for helping out by keeping his or her room straight? Should that same person be punished if they fail to keep their room straight?
When you have finished with the poll, tabulate your answers.
End with the Collect for the day.
