Lesson Plans for Young Children, Pentecost 16
Year C, Propers 20 (BCP pg. 182 or pg. 234), Amos 8:4-7 (8-12); Psalm 138; 1 Timothy 2:1-8; Luke 16:1- 13

WAYS TO BEGIN: Greet each child, especially any newcomers. Make sure everyone feels at home and knows the other children. If you like, you might serve light refreshments such as juice and cookies or crackers. Then invite the children into a circle.

THE THEME: The parable of the steward (a difficult one to comprehend) is about living in preparation for the judgement that is coming.

THE STORY: Luke 16:1-13 Because this is a confusing parable to many, you may wish to read only the last few lines beginning with "No servant can serve two masters...."

SOME QUESTIONS TO TALK ABOUT:

1. What are the most important things to you in your life? (Make a list for the whole class to talk about of most important or most valued things.)
2. Ask the class, "Why do you value these things?
3 .What do you think God thinks is most important? Why?
4. When you have to choose between several things you like, how do you make a choice?

AN EXERCISE TO DO: Play a game. Call out objects, or choices and have the children go from one side of the room to the other to show what their choices are. For example: If you like chocolate ice cream best, go to the right. If you prefer vanilla, go to the left. Each choice can be harder or more complex. You can then talk about why you made the choices you did.

End with a prayer in which you ask God to help you to make the right choices and always consider God's will in what you do.
