WAYS TO BEGIN: Spend social time together with coffee etc. then move to a circle for the class.

THE THEME: a continuation of the Sermon on the Mt.

THE STORY: Matt. 5:13-20  Have someone read the lesson aloud.

Discussion Questions
1.       What first catches your attention about this passage? Go around and let everyone respond.
2.       When you think of salt, what come to mind? What are the characteristics of salt? How might the Church be like salt?
3.       When you think of light, what comes to mind? What is light a symbol of for you? How can you as an individual be the light of the world?
4.       This passage contains Jesus saying some strong words about the Law. We know that on occasion, Jesus broke the law (healing on the Sabbath for example). How do you reconcile these seemingly opposite points of view, both credited to Jesus? How do you reconcile law and love in your own life? Is it ever good to break the law? Discuss.
5.       Are there laws that should never under any circumstances be broken?
6.       What is our responsibility as Christians to keeping the laws of the Bible and the laws of culture? When in conflict, how do you decide?
7.       How should lawbreakers of both Biblical and cultural laws be held accountable?
8.       What role does forgiveness play in understanding and carrying out the law?
