First Trustees Meeting in 2009 in USA
The CUAC Trustees met January 10 and 11 in New York City. A complete review was undertaken of CUAC: its historical mandate, its current membership and member expectations. It was noted that a new characteristic of CUAC is the establishment of national and/or regional chapters. Currently, there is a British Chapter, an Americas Chapter, an India Chapter, an Asia Chapter, and possibly an Australia Chapter. The Chapters are the key arenas for much of CUAC's programmatic and cooperative work between members. CUAC also functions as the network of information and cross-Communion encounter, primarily through the Triennial meeting and also Internet exchanges, by which institutions become aware of each other and can initiate projects and exchanges amongst themselves as opportunities arise. The current budget was reviewed, revealing a small expected deficit. Some of the servicing (income-producing) operations of the New York office have ended, meaning that CUAC now has to rely totally on the subscriptions/dues, and the small endowment provided for it by the primarily United States-based Association of Episcopal Colleges. In light of these restraints, it was decided to suspend publication of the journal, Prologue, and also to move the one office assistant position in New York from full to part time. The dates for the next Triennial are Saturday, May 21 to Thursday May 26, 2011 in Sewanee, Tennessee, USA. Internationally, one flies in to Atlanta, Georgia. We may stay the first night in Atlanta to enable folks to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Museum and also attend a black Episcopal parish as part of experiencing America.
Historic Schools Restoration Project (HSRP, South Africa)
Since Archbishop Ndungane addressed delegates at the Hong Kong Triennial in May 2008, there have been several follow-ups to the initiative that the Archbishop described of recovering and reactivating the historic (Black) schools and colleges that were closed in South Africa during the apartheid era. The Diocese of Newcastle (UK) has begun a financial support of this project. A major presentation was made at a consultation meeting of three U.S. colleges that took place in Raleigh, South Carolina. These three colleges, St. Paul's College, St. Augustine's College and Voorhees College, were established when The Episcopal Church began support for schools and colleges in the southern United States (referred to as the "Historically Black Colleges [HBC]") following the Civil War (1861–1865) to provide higher educational and religious instruction to African-Americans. One key insight that emerged was that U.S. HBC students are interested in volunteering and visiting the South African colleges, in order to learn from South Africa colleges which are similarly marginalized to those in the United States. Renison University College
News has been that CUAC member Renison College (University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada) has recently been approved as a "university college," becoming Renison University College. Degrees will continue to be conferred by the University of Waterloo. Renison University College carries on as a learner-centered institution and member of the University of Waterloo family, and continues to deliver first-rate post-secondary education. A new Principal has just been appointed, Dr. Glenn Cartwright, who has been Professor of the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology and former Dean of the Centre for Continuing Education at McGill University, Montréal. See http://www.renison.uwaterloo.ca/.
Conference on "Social Responsibility and Civic Engagement"
Roehampton University (UK) is holding an International Conference on "Social Responsibility and Civic Engagement – An Urgent Priority for Higher Education" from 16-18 June this year at their site in southwest London, a few miles from Heathrow Airport. The Conference is a partnership between Crucible, Roehampton’s Centre of Excellence in Human Rights, Social Justice and Citizenship Education and three of its founding colleges – Whitelands, Southlands and Digby Stuart - each of which has a Christian foundation (Anglican, Methodist and Roman Catholic). The conference will focus on four questions:(i) what is happening in civic and community engagement around the world? (ii) how can universities and colleges develop and extend their work with local communities? (iii) why should they be so engaged? (iv) how can universities and colleges support each other? The conference organizers are hoping for participation and written contributions from across the world. Full details and booking instructions can be found on the conference website http://www.unicivic.org.uk/.
University of the South - Sewanee
Vice Chancellor Joel Cunningham has announced his plans to retire in June 2010 from University of the South. Cunningham has been Vice-Chancellor since 2000. His administration has been characterized by fiscal discipline and a commitment to strategic planning, which have allowed campus construction and renovation projects that have modernized Sewanee’s learning and living environment. He has been active in the Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion and the Association of Episcopal Colleges, often attending the Triennial conferences with his wife Trudy. He will remain active and help Sewanee host the 2011 Conference. Also, he will remain at University of the South as a faculty member in the Math & Computer Science Department. See http://news.sewanee.edu/.
Anglican Health Network
At the Lambeth Conference in July 2008, an initiative emerged to form an Anglican Communion "Network" (CUAC is also a "Network") focused on health care. The project was initiated by the Rt. Rev. Rayford High, Jr., Suffragan Bishop of Texas, The Rev. Paul Holley, Anglican UN representative, Geneva, and the Rev. Dr. Don Thompson, CUAC. This network is proposed to be similar to CUAC, and to be a worldwide association of Anglican clinics, hospitals, nursing and medical colleges, as well as individual accredited Anglican health professionals. The proposal will go before the next meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) at their meetings in Jamaica in early May. That meeting of ACC is to focus on the ministry of the Anglican Communion Networks. CUAC has also been invited to attend and to present its work and program. Mrs. Bridgeth Gordon, Principal of the Church Teacher's College in Jamaica (CUAC member) will assist the General secretary in making the presentation to ACC. Information on the proposed healthcare network and the current list of those institutions and persons interested in it can be obtained through Paul Holley at paul.holley@mac.com.
The International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership (IPSL)
The International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership (IPSL), CUAC-AEC's sister organization, has moved its headquarters and offices from New York City to Portland State University in Oregon (USA). For many years service-learning was the main program activity of the Association of Episcopal Colleges (CUAC's parent), and IPSL developed program opportunities for young Episcopalians and American students. As a non-sectarian not-for-profit organization, IPSL could and did apply for public and foundation funding for service-learning education that would not have been accessible for organizations with a religious or church base. IPSL also developed international partnerships and locations for service-learning projects, many of which are the Anglican colleges and universities of CUAC. The move comes as a result of a new alliance with Portland State University to offer the M.A. in International Service (MAIS). This new alliance represents a re-focus to become both a teaching and consulting resource in service learning. See http://www.ipsl.org/.
The Asian Chapter
The inaugural meeting of the "Asian Chapter" was hosted by Rikkyo University October 27, 2008 in Tokyo. Twenty-three representatives attended from: Hong Kong/Chung Chi College, Taiwan/St. John's University, the Philippines/Trinity University of Asia, Korea/Sungkonghoe (Anglican) University, Japan/ St. Margaret's College, Japan/Nagoya Ryujo College, Japan/Momoyama Gakuin University, Japan/Kobe Shoin Women's University, Japan/Kobe International University, Japan/St. Luke’s College of Nursing, and Rikkyo University. The meeting began with sharing of the details of each institution's academic program, and then the sharing of relevant news of common interest to all member institutions. The meeting concluded with the identification of four key Asian priorities: the Church relationship, International Exchanges, Service-Learning, and Chaplaincy. Rikkyo University will function as the Secretariat for the Chapter.
