Church Buildings:
$1.7 million
We must rebuild our churches. Over 30% of Episcopal churches in the Dioceses of Louisiana and Mississippi were damaged by Katrina, and the effort to repair and rebuild Episcopal infrastructure will take decades and tens of millions of dollars. This is a staggering burden to bear and outside assistance is required.
In the Diocese of Louisiana, 35 churches were affected, 17 seriously. Every church in New Orleans was damaged. Deductibles and uninsured losses add up to nearly $4.8 million. Paying deductibles on these policies is an immediate need.
In Mississippi, every church on the Gulf coast was affected. Six churches were completely destroyed, and five churches and one school were damaged. Churches must be rebuilt and in some cases also relocated inland where they can serve as emergency response centers in the future. Ministry centers at their former locations could continue to serve the community.
Ultimately, up to $3 million will be needed to buy property for relocating churches.
Through Darkness Into Day, we will raise $600,000 to pay deductibles and $1.1 million to cover the cost of two properties already purchased.
