General Theological Seminary announces 2008 Paddock Lectures
Battle, who served as chaplain to the 2008 Lambeth Conference, will speak on the concept of Ubuntu: what it isn't (self-identity through competition), what it is (self-identity through community), and its usefulness in our times as a spiritual framework for global community.
Ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1993, Battle is a well-known writer, speaker and retreat leader. His ministry covers the globe and focuses on Christian non-violence, human spirituality, and African Church studies. He is a former professor at the University of the South and Duke University and former academic dean at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) in Alexandria.
The Paddock Lectures were founded in 1880 by GTS benefactor George A. Jarvis and named in honor of the Rt. Rev. Benjamin Henry Paddock, class of 1852. Past lecturers include theologians Francis J. Hall, William Temple, Diogenes Allen and, in 2004 Dr. Larry Hurtado.
The lectures begin on October 15 at 8 p.m. and continue on October 16 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information email Bruce Parker at bparker@gts.edu.
