Episcopal, Lutheran seminaries join forces for Summer Session 2007 at CDSP

[CDSP] In an extraordinary partnership, Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (PLTS) are teaming up to offer 2007 Summer Session courses, July 5-27, on the campus of CDSP, in Berkeley, California.

"This summer, Episcopalians and Lutherans will be coming together as a faith community -- celebrating not only with the common cup of the Eucharist, but celebrating our common ground, as well," said David Gortner, director of the Center for Learning and Leadership (CALL) at CDSP, which organized Summer Session 2007, and served as a catalyst for the Episcopal/Lutheran partnership. "This collaborative and creative effort between two denominations signifies the way forward in a bold new way."

Throughout July, a variety of theological education courses will be offered each week, embracing a designated theme. Summer Session themes and a sampling of courses include:

Church and World

  • Forward to a More Sustainable Future: The Millennium Development Goals, July 9-13
    Sheila Andrus, adjunct professor, Environmental Health Sciences, University of Alabama;
    Michael Kinman, Executive Director, Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation
  • Community Organizing and Congregations, July 5-7
    Don Stahlhut, national consultant, PICO National Network, Oakland, California

    Deborah Streicher, director, Generations in Faith Together, INKubators, Stillwater, Minnesota

    John Dreibelbis, professor emeritus, Christian Ministries, Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois;

Church and Gospel

    O.C. Edwards, professor emeritus, Preaching, Seabury-Western Theological Seminary
  • Ministry with Our Latino Neighbors, July 23-27
    Alicia Vargas, assistant professor of Multicultural Ministry, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary

"With our two denominations in full communion through the 'Call to Common Mission,' CDSP and PLTS saw a natural opportunity for collaboration with Summer Session 2007," said Gortner. "And, we have made a commitment going forward to offer jointly-sponsored programs and courses each year providing innovative and vital theological education for Lutherans and Episcopalians alike."
