Seabury-Western panel discussion to explore 'Who May Be Invited to the Table?'
During the 7:30-9 p.m. discussion in the Seabury Lounge, panelists will address the growing trend of Episcopal congregations inviting anyone present at the Eucharist -- whether or not baptized -- to receive communion, despite a canon stipulating that only those who are baptized shall be eligible to receive the sacrament. Panelists will explore this question from various perspectives -- biblical, historical, theological, liturgical, and pastoral.
The panelists include:
- The Very Rev. Matthew Gunter, rector, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Glen Ellyn, Illinois;
- The Rev. Dr. Tom Holtzen, associate professor of Historical and Systematic Theology, Nashotah House;
- The Rev. Dr. Ruth Meyers, professor of Liturgics, Seabury-Western;
- The Very Rev. Juan Reed, vicar, St. Martin's Episcopal Church, Chicago;
- The Very Rev. James Steen, rector, St. Paul and the Redeemer Episcopal Church, Chicago;
- Dr. Kathryn Tanner, professor of Theology, University of Chicago Divinity School;
The discussion will be moderated by the Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean and president of Seabury-Western.
Seabury-Western Theological Seminary is located at 2122 Sheridan Road in Evanston, Illinois.
