New Saturday learning opportunities at General Seminary announced
"The Spiritualities of Vestries & Congregational Leaders" with the Rev. Dr. David Keller, Saturday, March 1, 2008. Cost: $99 (Includes lunch). Perfect for new or experienced vestry or parish leaders as well as for clergy. Through class presentation by the instructor, discussion, and small group discernment, this seminar will explore the Biblical and theological foundations that integrate prayer and work. The class will focus on a three-fold pattern in the life of Jesus that included listening, discernment, and compassionate response. Students will examine Jesus' understanding of power, as well as learn from examples of leadership and administration in the life, challenges, and conflicts of the early Christian faith communities. Emphasis will be placed on practical ways in which parish vestry members can be attentive to God's voice in the Gospel itself, in themselves, in their colleagues, in the parish, and in the world.
David Keller, an adjunct professor at GTS, is co-founder and coordinator of the Contemplative Ministry Project. He is also the author of "Oasis of Wisdom: The Worlds of the Desert Fathers and Mothers," published by the Liturgical Press. From 1994-2002 he was steward of the Episcopal House of Prayer at St. John's Benedictine Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.
"Spiritual Scrapbooking" with Sharon Sheridan, Saturday, March 29, 2008. Cost: $159 (Includes lunch, scrapbook and other materials). Learn how to create scrapbooks which demonstrate an individual, family or a parish's spiritual journey. Many people begin scrapbooking as a way to record family history. With spiritual scrapbooking, you use the popular craft of making scrapbooks as a spiritual tool to record and explore your faith. You combine illustrations -- your photographs -- with words -- your own or those from other sources such as the Bible, hymns or inspirational writers -- to tell your unique faith story. Most of the workshop will be hands-on: participants will be guided in using these materials to create their scrapbooks; additional tools will be demonstrated, such as those used for cropping photos; and participants will be free to use these tools during the workshop. The instructor will also provide a handout highlighting various types of spiritual scrapbooks.
Sheridan is an award-winning journalist who copy edits and regularly writes for Episcopal Life. Her articles also have appeared in The Star-Ledger, New Jersey Business magazine, The VOICE and The Pennsylvania Episcopalian. The author of Hear the Cry! Standing in Solidarity with the Suffering Church, she is the recipient of several Polly Bond awards, and an avid scrapbooker. She lives in New Jersey with her husband, son and an assortment of household pets.
"The Islamic Jesus and His Blessed Mother" with Dr. Lucinda Mosher, Saturday April 26, 2008. Cost: $299 (including overnight stay and 3 meals) or $199 (2 meals without overnight stay). Discover the surprising importance of Jesus and Mary to the Muslim faith. What does the Qur'an have to say about Mary and her son Jesus? What have Muslims taught about them over the centuries? What roles do they play in Muslim piety? This workshop will introduce Christians to "Issa and Maryam: Jesus and His Blessed Mother," as Muslims know them. Co-Sponsored by Interweave of New Jersey.
Lucinda Mosher is a consultant, educator and author who specializes in inter-religious relations. She is the author of the "Faith in the Neighborhood" book series, which addresses America's religious diversity.
