Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership at CDSP offering course for visual artists
"Creative Practice in Prayer and Worship" will examine today's diverse and complicated world, where faith and worship find power to communicate through the shared vernacular of the visual.
It is believed that the arts are tools of faith that foster a more personal relationship with the Divine and others. During the week, participants will engage in the discipline of the creative process while exploring selected scriptural themes applied in daily life, faith and doubt.
They will work in a collaborative studio arts environment and can take advantage of individual tutorials available outside the scheduled class time. Studio space and ample time for personal work will be provided. In addition, participants are encouraged to bring samples of their work in slide or electronic form for presentation and discussion.
Participants will also read and consider scripture from different points of view that include current events, poetry, literature, and art history. The class will then discuss visual interpretations of the scripture passage. Students will have the opportunity to express these scriptural interpretations through a variety of exploratory modes. Some creative practice will be group collaborative, while some creative practice will be left to the individual.
The course will be led by Episcopal Church and Visual Arts (ECVA) instructors Paula Wallace, working artist with a studio at the Hot Shops Art Center, Omaha Nebraska; and Mel Ahlborn, fellow of the Center for Arts, Religion and Education (CARE) at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, California.
Cost is $310 before June 2 and $340 thereafter. Enrollment is limited. Interested students are urged to reserve their place before May 23. On-Campus housing is available on a first-come basis.
