
Barbara Brown Taylor, J. Philip Newell to lead Advent Retreat at Kanuga
Their talks will focus on rediscovering ancient ways of devoting oneself to Christ.
Taylor is an Episcopal priest, religion professor and author of 11 books, including "When God is Silent," "Home By Another Way" and her latest, "Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith." Ordained in 1984, she spent 15 years in parish ministry before becoming a full-time teacher.
She now teaches religion at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia, where she holds the Harry R. Butman Chair in Religion and Philosophy. She also serves as adjunct professor of Christian spirituality at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia.
Newell is a poet, author and teacher who has earned international acclaim for helping to recover traditions of Celtic spirituality. Formerly warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, he is a writer theologian for the Scottish Cathedral of the Isles as well as a companion theologian for the American Spirituality Centre of Casa del Sol in New Mexico.
A Church of Scotland minister, he has written 11 books, including "Listening for the Heartbeat of God" and "Sounds of the Eternal." His new book, "Christ of the Celts: The Healing of Creation," was released in May.
The Rev. Brian Prior, rector of the Church of the Resurrection in Spokane Valley, Washington, and singer-songwriter Fran McKendree of Hendersonville have teamed up to coordinate the retreat.
Prior, vice president of the Episcopal Church's House of Deputies, also will serve as conference chaplain. McKendree will be joined by Charles Milling, contemporary music director at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Boynton Beach, Florida, to provide music.
