Eighteenth annual Solo Flight conference set to build community
Solo Flight is an intergenerational conference for single adults that offers opportunities for spiritual growth, learning, fellowship and networking with those who share similar values.
According to Kay Collier McLaughlin, Solo Flight founder and coordinator, this year's conference will share ideas of how to go about building such communities, both individually and in parishes.
Brother Daniel Ludwik, OHC, from the Order of the Holy Cross at the Mariya uMama weThemba Monastery in Grahamstown, South Africa, will deliver the keynote address. Ludwik, a survivor of the South African Border War and the recent civil war in the Republic of Congo, is a native of Namibia. He credits those experiences with helping lead him to monastic life.
The conference will also include presentations, workshops, evening fun and daily morning and evening worship in the Episcopal tradition. One highlight will be the Liturgy of Healing and Wholeness and Blessing of Singularity.
Serving as conference chaplains will be the Rev. Dr. Jan Dunnavant, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Nicholasville, Kentucky, and the Rev. Dr. David Perkins, vicar of All Souls Episcopal Church, Mechanicsville, Virginia. Returning as conference musician will be the Rev. J. Bruce Stewart from the Center for Liturgy and the Arts in Annandale, Virginia, while Benjamin Bynum, executive director of Reading Camp for the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky will host young adults.
This year's artist will include Jennifer Mizenko, professor of dance at the University of Mississippi, in Oxford and Cathy McGlasson, teacher at Suzuki Talent Education of Appalachia, in Kingsport, Tennessee.
