Teaching: Sewanee Church Music Conference to hold 57th gathering July 9-15

[Episcopal News Service] The largest and oldest Episcopal Church music conference in the country, Sewanee Church Music Conference, will hold its 57th gathering at the University of the South and the DuBose Conference Center July 9-15 in Tennessee.

The meeting will offer participants continuing education in liturgy and music with a faculty comprising some of the finest clergy and church musicians in both the United States and Europe. The curriculum is specifically designed for musicians working in smaller parishes and an extensive display of music will be provided by Lois Fyfe Music, the Saint James Music Press, E-Libris Publishing, and Church Music Services, Inc., publisher of "Psalms Made Singable."

Director of the 2007 conference is Keith Shafer, director of music and organist at Saint Paul's Church, in Augusta, Georgia. Other leaders include Dr. Gerre Hancock, professor of Music at the School of Music at the University of Texas; his wife Judith Hancock,   senior lecturer in Music at the School of Music at the University of Texas; the Rev. Dr. Dennis Maynard, priest and author from Rancho Mirage, California; Dr. Robert Delcamp, professor of Music at the University of the South; Donald E. Dupee, Jr. of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken, South Carolina; Larry Marchese, education manager of Sibelius Software; Susan Rupert of the School of Theology at The University of the South; Mark Schwelzer of St. James Music Press; and Ceclia Tolar-Bane of St. John's Episcopal Church, in Columbia, South Carolina.

In addition, the curriculum will include classes on choir training, chanting (both Anglican and Plainchant), hymn playing, organ improvisation, anthem accompaniment, music publishing software, and sessions for those who are new to the Episcopal Church.

Registration is $250 per person and two full scholarships that include registration, and room and board, are available to first-time attendees.
