Church Divinity School of the Pacific announces annual Epiphany West conference
'Sacred Text as Window' seeks to 'meet one another through our sacred texts'
Conference classes will be held January 28-30, with presentations January 30-February 1.
The popular annual event will be held on the CDSP campus in Berkeley, California, and is organized by the Center for Anglican Learning Leadership (CALL) at CDSP, in partnership with the Richard S. Dinner Center for Jewish Studies, and the Center for Islamic Studies -- both at the Graduate Theological Union -- and the Episcopal Church's Office of Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations.
Featured presentations will include:
- "Can We Read Religious Texts Inter-religiously?" by Peter Phan, Ellacuria Chair of Catholic Social Thought, Theology Department, Georgetown University, Washington D.C.;
- "Toward a Judaeo-Muslim Sexual Ethic," by Charlotte Elisheva Fonrobert, associate professor of religious studies and co-director of the Taube Center for Jewish Studies, Stanford University, Stanford, California;
- "Embracing the 'Other' as an Extension of the Self," by A. Rashied Omar, research scholar of Islamic ethics and peacebuilding, Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana; and
- "Moses Received the Torah at Sinai and Handed It On," by Daniel Joslyn-Siemiatkoski, assistant professor of church history, CDSP.
"This year's Epiphany West conference takes inter-religious dialogue to a new level of engagement, by meeting one another through our sacred texts," said David Gortner, CALL director.
CALL, a recognized leader in online theological education, offers a range of courses and programs designed to enrich the religious life and strengthen the ministry of every Christian adult.
Among the Epiphany West classes and workshops offered is a Beit Midrash (House of Study) January 28-30. Rabbi Alan Lew, rabbi emeritus of Congregation Beth Sholom, San Francisco, will lead three consecutive daily sessions of intensive reading and discussion of sacred texts.
Special prayer and worship services will be offered throughout the conference, including Muslim Noonday Prayer, and a Shabbat Service and Meal, both on February 1. The preacher at Eucharist on January 30 will be Anglican Church of Canada Bishop Michael Ingham of the Diocese of New Westminister, Vancouver.
