On Earth Day, Presiding Bishop challenges all to 'be green'

[Episcopal News Service] Challenging everyone to "Be green," Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori led the Earth Day 2008 observance at the Episcopal Church Center in New York City.

Joining the nation in observing Earth Day, the congregation at the Church Center began the daily Eucharist with drums and the chanting of a Dakota Indian song that honors the Creator:

"Many and great O God are thy works
Maker of earth and sky." (Hymnal #385)

"I believe children can tell us how to care for the earth," Jefferts Schori said in her sermon.  She then proceeded to illustrate ways to care for the earth by showing items that can help the environment: re-usable grocery bags; long-lasting light bulbs; re-useable water bottles; and a spork (fork on one-side, spoon on the other).

The Presiding Bishop also advised using public transportation (holding up a NYC metro card), and eating foods grown locally.

She suggested such resources as the Genesis Covenant, Clean Skies  and the recent HOPE Conference in the Diocese of Olympia.

The Prayers of the People also focused on the environment:  "Grant us a spirit of concern for the future of our environment; bring an end to the exploitation of the earth's scarce resources; and encourage us to be responsible stewards of your Creation."

Following Eucharist, the 815 Green Team met for a brown bag lunch and discussion about the environment.
