Sports 'shorts' a welcome donation
[Episcopal Life] When Bob Schwoch of St. James Episcopal Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, started planning an outing to a Milwaukee Admirals hockey game, a billboard at the arena caught his eye. "Boxer Shorts Night," said the sign at the Bradley Center, just blocks from St. James. The first 3,500 fans in attendance were to receive a free pair of boxer shorts emblazoned with the Admirals logo.
Schwoch, a former sports writer who covered the Admirals for the Milwaukee Journal back in the 1980s, knew he had a winner. Underwear is a huge need for the homeless in St. James' central city neighborhood. The church never can seem to collect enough for its clothing ministry.
Schwoch and friends got busy assembling as large a group as they could to cheer for the Admirals. After the game, the "souvenirs" collected by the church's sports fans and other game-goers who decided to donate, too, all went into the bin for the homeless and disadvantaged in Milwaukee's central city. The final count: 100-plus pairs.
