NEW YORK: Commemoration of British slave trade abolition set for September 30

[Episcopal News Service] Historic St. Philip's Church in Harlem (Diocese of New York), the first African-American Episcopal parish in New York City, will host a service to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in Britain on Sunday, September 30, at 4 p.m.

The evensong service will be led by Long Island Bishop Orris G. Walker, Jr. and Bishop E. Don Taylor, vicar bishop of New York. Featured will be a musical program reflecting the heritage of the sons and daughters of the African diaspora. Music will be directed by Carlos D. Prescod, St. Mark's, Brooklyn (Diocese of Long Island).

Preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Kortright Davis, professor of theology at Howard University, Washington, D.C.

Choristers are welcome to participate. Clergy are invited to vest in cassock, surplice, scarf and hood and join the procession.

St. Philip's is located at 204 West 134th Street (Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard) in New York City.
