CHICAGO: Five bishop nominees announced

[Diocese of Chicago] Five nominees for the 12th bishop of Chicago were received from the Bishop Search Committee and announced August 28 by the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago's Standing Committee, subject to completion of background checks:

The five nominees are:

  • The Rev. Jane S. Gould, priest-in-charge/rector, St. Stephen's Memorial Episcopal Church, Lynn, Massachusetts.
  • The Rev. Jeffrey D. Lee, rector, St. Thomas Church, Medina, Washington.
  • The Very Rev. Tracey Lind, dean, Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio.
  • The Rev. Margaret R. Rose, director of Women's Ministries, the Episcopal Church.
  • The Rev. Timothy B. Safford, rector, Christ Church, Philadelphia.

Additional candidates can be nominated through a petition process overseen by the Standing Committee. Information about that process is available online here. Nominees will be introduced at a series of presentation gatherings throughout the diocese to he held October 21-27, and the electing convention will be held November 10 at the diocese's annual convention in Wheeling, Illinois.

After the majority of Standing Committees of the other dioceses of the Episcopal Church and bishops with jurisdiction have given their consents to the election, the new bishop of Chicago will assume office on February 2.

The new bishop will succeed the Rt. Rev. William D. Persell, who has served as bishop of Chicago since March 1999.
