COLOMBIA: Diocese to observe Week of Prayer for Peace
A series of events will highlight the plight of displaced persons, the many children severely injured by the explosion of anti-personnel mines, and prisoners held by the guerrillas, some of whom have been held captive for more than ten years. The Episcopal Church's commitment to the peace and reconciliation process in Colombia is "essential to the ministry of our diocese," said Colombia Bishop Francisco Duque Gómez in a recent interview.
"Truth, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation" was the focus of a planned September 5 event at the Mennonite Church, Tausaquillo. "Life, Liberty, and Dignity are ours by right: Affirming the Humanitarian Agreement" will be the focus of a September 7 service at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, Bogota. The final service, "The Rights of Displaced Individuals: An Urgent Call," will be held at the Catholic Religious Conference Center, Bogota, on September 10.
The Week was officially launched on August 24, 2007, during a public meeting held at the Center Catholic Conference of Bishops. The event has drawn Human Right advocacy groups, ecumenical leaders, organizations fostering the peace and reconciliation process in Colombia, and ambassadors of the 24 nations committed to Colombia's peace and reconciliation.
