WASHINGTON, D.C.: Cathedral Day to kick off centennial celebrations September 29

[Episcopal News Service] Marking the beginning of Washington National Cathedral's centennial celebration, a Cathedral Day Open House 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on September 29 will include a free music festival, demonstrations by cathedral artisans, food, children's activities, puppet shows, tower climbs, garden walks, a hymn sing, an organ recital, special tours and a birthday cake with 100 candles. Kicking off the Cathedral's centennial year, the Cathedral Day will feature a reenactment of the laying of the foundation stone in the amphitheater at 12 noon, a birthday cake cutting with Teddy Roosevelt at 2:15 p.m. and a rare opportunity to climb the 330 spiraling steps up the Cathedral's central tower. A bell ringing demonstration and close-up view of the North rose window will also be available.

At 3 p.m., a hymn-sing in the Cathedral Nave will precede the Centennial Evening Prayer: A Celebration of Music, Dance and Praise at 4:30 p.m.

The day will also include a demonstration of Cathedral Arts, such as brass polishing, needlepoint, cathedral stitchers, and flower arranging.

A Festival Worship Service will be held Sunday, September 30, at 11:15 a.m. in honor of the Cathedral's first century. Cathedral Dean Samuel T. Lloyd III will preach at this service to commemorate the Cathedral's rich history.
