Audio book features dramatic readings of Advent meditations
An author and retreat leader who has performed in plays and given mono-dramas on women in the Old Testament, Whitley gives dramatic readings of her 27 meditations, with musical accompaniment, for her first audio book, released November 14.
Whitley places herself in the hearts and minds of the biblical characters -- both real and imagined -- who played a part in the Christmas narrative.
"I want the voices to lead us closer to the Christ Child and deepen the meaning of the season of Advent," she said.
A native of Greece who now lives in North Carolina, Whitley is an adjunct instructor at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. She is the author of Speaking for Ourselves: Voices of Biblical Women, Seeing for Ourselves: Biblical Women Who Met Jesus and Walking the Way of Sorrows, all available from Morehouse Publishing.
"There is a rise in the sale of audio books because, in addition to serving people with poor eyesight and others who make long commutes, audio books connect us directly with the author," said Elizabeth Cauthorn, a founding member of the Episcopal Booksellers Association and former manager of the Episcopal bookstore in San Antonio, Texas.
"These monologues by Katerina particularly lend themselves to audio, and they are a creative way for Christian educators to engage whole groups. They have value not only for churches, but for individuals in their private preparation for Christmas," said Cauthorn, who produced the audio book.
The $24.95, three-CD package includes questions for individual study and group discussion.
