Texas lay leader appointed chief counsel to Federal Aviation Administration

[Episcopal News Service] David Grizzle, a choice for General Convention lay deputy from the Diocese of Texas and a former vice president for Continental Airlines, has been appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as chief counsel to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Grizzle was sworn in June 15.

Grizzle held various positions at Continental Airlines from 1984 until his retirement in September 2008. He has served as senior vice president of marketing strategy and corporate development and was vice president of legal and corporate affairs for Texas Air Corporation, the former parent company of Continental.

In late 2004 and 2005, Grizzle served in Afghanistan as transportation and infrastructure coordinator for the U.S. Department of State.

Given Grizzle's new role with the FAA, he will be unable to attend the 76th General Convention, meeting July 8-17 in Anaheim, California. He will be replaced by Tom Fitzhugh as the fourth lay deputy for the Diocese of Texas.

"Although I deeply regret that I will not be able to be a deputy to General Convention from the Diocese of Texas, I am even more grateful to be able to serve the president as chief counsel of the FAA during this critical time in the development of the agency," Grizzle said in an email message.
