
Author Mary C. Earle to hold book signing at New York's Catalyst Café May 18
[Episcopal News Service] The Catalyst Café & Books and Church Publishing Inc. are teaming up to host a book signing on May 18, 3-5 p.m., with the Rev. Mary C. Earle, author of "The Desert Mothers: Spiritual Practices from the Women of the Wilderness."The book signing will be held at the Catalyst Café & Books, located at 815 Second Avenue, New York City.
Earle, a resident of San Antonio, Texas, is a writer, poet, retreat leader and Episcopal priest. She teaches, both on campus and online, for the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas and has also written "Broken Body" and "Healing Spirit: Lectio Divina and Living with Illness."
Her latest installment explores the unique spirituality of the desert mothers as "holy women at the dawn of Christianity who went into the wilderness of the deserts of northern Egypt to give themselves totally to lives of prayer." Her work calls readers to learn ways to apply their wisdom today and offers fruitful material for retreats and quiet days.
Earle's work has been anthologized and published in a variety of journals, newsletters and websites. Her most recent articles appear in the fall 2006 issue of "Radical Grace," from the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and on http://www.explorefaith.org/, a website for seekers of faith.
With Covita Moroney of the San Antonio, Texas Vocal Arts Ensemble, Earle created "Sofia's Table," a CD of poems and songs celebrating the divine feminine. Recently she and the Rev. Jane Patterson, her colleague at The Work+Shop, a ministry of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas, collaborated on a CD titled "Telling the Brothers: Perspectives on Mary Magdalene."
Earle has offered presentations in a variety of ecumenical settings, including conferences of Spiritual Directors International, the International Thomas Merton Society and hospice organizations. In 2003, she received the Durstan R. McDonald Award for excellence in teaching from the Seminary of the Southwest.
