Thomas Moore III to lead Society for the Increase of the Ministry
Moore comes to SIM after working most recently with the Friends of Canterbury Cathedral in the United States (FOCCUS); the Church Pension Group (CPG); and the Episcopal Church Center at 815 Second Avenue, New York.
As executive director, Moore helped to establish FOCCUS as an independent not-for-profit organization, which produces publications and a website, sponsored a recent pilgrimage to Canterbury and organizes fund-raising events at congregations around the country.
Moore also worked for three years as senior advisor to Church Pension Group CEO Alan Blanchard until his retirement. While at CPG, Moore was called by Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold to serve as the Episcopal Church’s interim treasurer and CFO for the summer of the 2003 General Convention in Minneapolis.
Moore previously served for six years as senior project director at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Moore is a graduate of the University of Virginia and holds an MBA from Emory University. In his early career, he became a certified public accountant and held various positions in financial management with corporations and financial services companies in Tennessee and the Northeast. He is married to the Rev. Helen M. Moore, who has served Episcopal parishes in Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio, Connecticut and Virginia. In addition to their five adult children, the couple has seven grandchildren.
The Society for the Increase of the Ministry is in its 151st year of providing both financial and pastoral support to Episcopal seminarians in need across America. Since its founding in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1857, the Society has supported about 4900 seminarians. In the current academic year, SIM is providing support to 71 students attending all 11 accredited Episcopal seminaries—students who represent nearly half the dioceses of the Episcopal Church. In 2006, SIM began a fund-raising effort, “Funding Future Leaders: A National Endowment for Episcopal Seminarians”, to raise an endowment of $200 million to insure that seminarians would no longer incur indebtedness while responding to God’s call to ordained ministry.
Thomas Moore will succeed the Rev. Canon John L.C. Mitman, who has led the Society since 2001. Mitman will continue with SIM as Chief Development Officer.
