Learning to Arrange Flowers
This arrangement from Grace Church Flower Festival, Charleston features a beautiful vase.

Winter is over, spring is here and it is time to look for and plan new floral offerings. As we travel around the town or country, look at the landscapes for shapes and color combinations. Check out flowers you are unfamiliar with. Visit churches to see their altar arrangements; I have learned many things from other flower guilds.

It is also a good time to think about attending a school or flower arranging class. I have just returned from Washington National Cathedral’s annual Altar Flower Seminar. I have been part of this for most years since 1978 when Sandra Hynson started it. Every year they take 34-36 students from across the nation; this year two were men and all were from out of town. They stay on the grounds of the cathedral; with meals and lectures in the residence building and workshops in the cathedral. The seminar, usually the last week of January, begins on a Monday afternoon and is over Friday after lunch. The time is fully scheduled with only Thursday night free. The best are the incomparable flower demonstrations using mechanics, flowers, greens, containers and ideas new to you. You are given tours of the bell tower to watch the bell ringing, the cathedral, and Washington by night with stops at the Roosevelt, World War II, Korean and Lincoln Memorials.

People come early and stay longer by making their own arrangements. Although many come in pairs, more than half come alone and every year the group bonds quickly. Beginners are welcome, but experienced arrangers are more at ease and knowledgeable in lectures and workshops.

For more information about this seminar, contact Linda Roeckelein, Altar Guild, Washington National Cathedral, Mass. & Wis. Ave. N.W. Washington, DC 20016.

This display in Grace Church, Port Orange, FL is on a narrow folding table supported by two flower stands.
