A Baroque Christmas in Rome

Ubicaci贸n:
Church of St. Luke in the Fields, 487 Hudson Street, New York, NY

The Choir of St. Luke in the Fields, under the direction of David Shuler, with an ensemble of period instruments, presents A Baroque Christmas in Rome on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 8 p.m. at the Church of Saint Luke in the Fields, 487 Hudson Street.   There will be a lecture by Dr. Raymond Erickson at 7 p.m.

This concert of music that might have been heard on Christmas Eve in Rome in the early 18th century will feature Alessandro Scarlatti鈥檚 Messa per il Santissimo Natale, a Christmas mass composed in the Roman polychoral style for two choirs and strings, and his Christmas Cantata for soprano and strings. The music of the mass captures the essence of the Christmas narrative, from the joyously dancing violin ritornellos to the reverence of the Nativity scene. In addition, the program will include festive motets by Scarlatti and Giacomo Carissimi and organ works by Bernardo Pasquini.  Melissa Fogarty will be the soprano soloist in the Christmas Cantata.

The Choir of Saint Luke in the Fields is a professional ensemble made up of some of New York City's finest singers, directed by David Shuler.  As part of the liturgy at St. Luke鈥檚 Church, the Choir regularly performs masses and motets that date from the fifteenth century to the present.  The Choir is noted for its performances of early music, and in particular for bringing works to New York City audiences that that have not been heard here before.  The Choir has presented the first New York performance of CPE Bach鈥檚 recently rediscovered St. Matthew Passion of 1769, the first North American performance of Telemann鈥檚 St. Matthew Passion of 1746 and St. Luke Passion of 1748, the first New York performance of Johann Theile鈥檚 St. Matthew Passion of 1763, and the first North American performance of Gregorio Allegri鈥檚 Missa Christus resurgens.

The most recent recording by Saint Luke's Choir is O Magnum Mysterium: Christmas in Iberia, featuring Tom谩s Luis de Victoria鈥檚 Missa O magnum mysterium. The singing of the Choir of St. Luke in the Fields was featured in an ABC news special, Secrets of the Sistine 鈥 Michelangelo鈥檚 Mystery, which first aired in May 2008.

The Church of Saint Luke in the Fields is located at 487 Hudson Street in Greenwich Village, one block south of Christopher Street.  Tickets for the concert are $35, and $25 for students and senior citizens.  Tickets will be available at the door or in advance at stlukeinthefields.org/store.  For further information, ticket sales or reservations, please call 212-414-9419.
