Welcomes You

Religious Life Office of Hobart and William Smith Colleges

The Rev. Lesley M. Adams

The Religious Life Office seeks primarily to be spiritually supportive of the intellectual life of the Colleges' community, and thereby itself stands in the liberal arts tradition.

The Religious Life Office acts on the idea that the life of the spirit and the life of the mind need not be separate or mutually exclusive, but in fact may be profoundly interrelated.
The Religious Life Office represents the idea that engagement with that interrelationship can be life-changing, life-forming and life-giving.

The Religious Life Office seeks to contribute to the building up of a more humane, compassionate and understanding community. It seeks to help individuals and groups ask deep questions and make connections among disparate aspects of their own lives and between their lives and others. It seeks to foster a spirit of free and reasonable inquiry and encourage an ethical, social conscience.

The Religious Life Office stands for the idea that these endeavors can have religious meaning, be occasions of revelation and sources of inspiration.

The Religious Life Office seeks to engage constructively the pluralism of contemporary life. It strives particularly to promote an understanding and appreciation of the variety of religious and spiritual experience in human life; it strives likewise to promote an awareness of the world, especially its needs and to offer ways persons can respond through generosity and service.

In words borrowed from our own religious heritage, Religious Life Office seeks to promote a respect for the dignity of every human being, a concern for justice and peace among all people, the nurture of inquiring and discerning hearts, the qualities of courage and perseverance among individuals, and a spirit of reverence and knowledge, joy and wonder in all of God's works.
