(Thursday 9:00 – 4:00)

A parable is first of all a story, usually a colorful story, which is designed to be so ambiguous that it forces the listener to think seriously and creatively about its meaning, to go behind the story to life itself. In the 9th chapter of Luke, Jesus “sets his face for Jerusalem,” beginning his slow journey to the cross and resurrection. This is Jesus’ last opportunity to share several unique parables with his followers. We will spend the day immersed in these stories about lost sheep, lost coins, lost boys, and a Good Samaritan as we try to discern their meanings for each of us. Bring your Bible and your brain, and be prepared to think deeply, to laugh joyously, and to allow the Word to be within you.

Following a career in healthcare, Helen Goodkin, SCHC, completed an M.A. in Biblical Studies at General Theological Seminary. Her thesis focused on the healing stories in Luke and was awarded the J. Wilson Sutton Prize. She regularly leads Bible study programs that are rooted in the text and seek out the continuities between the Old Testament and the New. Helen loves the Gospel according to Luke and is sure that at the end of the day you will too!
