Moan of the Forest or The Cherokee’s Lament by Anthony Phillip Heinrich (1840s)
“From The Diary of Sally Hemings” and “The Moan of the Forest or The Cherokee’s Lament” address two grave injustices that went hand-in-hand with the founding of the United States: slavery and the persecution of Native Americans. It was only in the late 1990s that the long-rumored existence of Jefferson’s relationship with one of his slaves, Sally Hemings, was factually confirmed through DNA evidence coming from the descendants of that relationship. “The Moan of the Forest or the Cherokees Lament” by Anthony Phillip Heinrich commemorates the Cherokee’s 1830s forced exile from their native land demanded by the US government under president Andrew Jackson. This harsh trek across the Mississippi--during which many Native Americans lost their lives--is commonly referred to as the “trail of tears.”
