Consecrated the sixth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas March 6, 1993. A strong advocate of biblical authority, Bishop Stanton is actively involved in reasserting traditional values of Christian faith, order, and morality at the national church level while strengthening mission and evangelism ministries throughout the diocese.
He came to Dallas after serving for six years as rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Glendale, California. He has served as curate, vicar, and rector at Episcopal churches in California (Canoga and Stockton) and Iowa (Cedar Falls).
Bishop Stanton has stressed The Great Commission of Jesus Christ during his episcopacy in Dallas. The diocese conducts ongoing evangelism education and has added five new mission churches. The Episcopal Diocese of Dallas is the second-fastest growing diocese in the nation for the last five years.
He is a frequent guest columnist in The Dallas Morning News and has been interviewed about national church issues in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and on ABC World News Tonight, 20/20 and other television and radio programs.
A native of Atchison, Kansas, Bishop Stanton graduated from ChapmanUniversity in Southern California. After college he pursued ordination in the Disciples of Christ and attended Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky. He transferred to the Southern California School of Theology, where he graduated with a D. Min. degree in 1975. He spent a year in further study at the Church of the Divinity School of the Pacific and was ordained to the Episcopal diaconate in Los Angeles in 1977. In October 1977, he was ordained to the priesthood.
Bishop Stanton has been married to Diane since December, 1968 and they have two grown children.
Jennifer Stanton Hargrave is a Dallas attorney and married to Jeffrey Hargrave. They have three children, William, Weston and Evellyn Hargrave. Justin Stanton is married to D'Anne. The couple has two children, James and Elizabeth Stanton.
